Modern Youth
When you leave school you understand that the time of your independent life and the beginning of a far more serious examination of your abilities and character has come. You also understand that from now you’ll have to do everything by yourself, and to “fight” with everybody around you for better life. The first problem that young people meet is to choose their future profession, it means that they have to choose the future of their life. It’s not an easy task to make the right choice of a job. You know children have a lot of dreams about their future: to become a superman or a policeman or a doctor … It’s very easy they think, but when they become older and see real world they understand that in all professions need to know perfectly about what you do, you must be well-educated and well-informed. That’s why I think it’s very important to have a good education at school. And if you work hard everything will be OK.
Youth is a very important period in the life of a human being. This is the time when a person discovers the world and tries to determine his place in the universe. Young people face a great deal of problems which are very important for them. They do not differ much from those that their parents had. At the same time every generation is unique.
Adults always say that the young are not what they, parents, were. Young people of today don`t directly accept the values and standards of their “fathers”. It is one of the causes of “generation gap”. Adults often apply old standards to the new way of life but the majority of young people don`t want to live in the past. They have their own ideals. They want to make their own mistakes, rather than to listen to parents` warnings. Problems with parents are also caused by different tastes for music, films, books, clothes, etc. Quite an important problem of teenagers is the choice of a true friend who would meet the proverb “A friend in need is a friend indeed”. It is also a challenge for young people to learn to deal with people, to support good relations with friends, classmates, peers, etc.
All humans have problems because there are a lot of good and evil things in our life which is like a zebra, with black and white stripes. Young people have many problems as they grow up. Another problem of young people is drugs. This is a relatively new problem but it is becoming more and more dangerous. Millions of young people today are using drugs, and most of them will die. Usually they want just to try it and then do it again and again … I think police must work hard to protect young people from narcotics because drugs will kill our young generation and our future will be grey. People of almost every age are susceptible to this pernicious disease but it hits the youth the hardest.
It is impossible to enter any university to get a prestigious profession without proper knowledge. But today teenagers want to go to the theatres, cinemas, to visit foreign countries, to eat out in fashionable places, to wear trendy outfit. To get all this they need money. That`s why many of them wash cars, sell mobile phones, work as couriers, etc. From one hand that is right as it will teach them to value money, to manage it, to receive all they what by themselves, not via parents` help but on the other hand such a behavior affects studying and the quality of knowledge students get. But it`s a common truth that everybody is a master of his own life and he should do as he thinks is right.
Ex. 16. What do you think the typical family of the future will be like? Read the first paragraph of the article and find out.
Families have a great-great future
Twenty years ago, the typical extended family was 'wide'. It usually consisted of two or three generations, with many children in each 'nuclear family'. People had lots of aunts and uncles but often didn't know their grandparents. However, according to a new study by the British research group Mintel, the family is changing shape. The family groups of the future will be 'long and thin', with three or four small generations.
Here are some of their predictions:
- Most children will know their great-grandparents (and even great-great-grandparents) because people are living longer.
- Very few children will have brothers or sisters, and it will be common to be an only child. As a result, future generations will not have many cousins either.
- Many children will grow up isolated from other children and young adults. This will make them more selfish and introverted.
- More couples will divorce and re-marry, some more than once. They may have children with their new partners, so many children will have a stepmother or stepfather and half-brothers or sisters.
- There will be many 'boomerang children'. These are children who leave home to get married, but then divorce and return to live with their parents.
- There will be more single-parent families.
- Because houses are now so expensive, different generations may decide to live together, so parents, grandparents, and adult children may co-own their houses, and many couples will have to live with their in-laws.
